Job Purpose

The Governance Intern will support overall compliance with relevant statutory and regulatory requirements to help the organisation achieve its strategic goals and operational targets.

The role provides practical exposure to compliance management, regulatory risk identification, governance processes, and internal control monitoring within a structured corporate environment.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • LLB
  • BCom Law
  • Certificate in Compliance Management (ideal but not mandatory)

Experience

  • No prior work experience required

Key Performance Areas and Responsibilities

Compliance Management

Assist with:

  • Conducting compliance and complaints training and awareness initiatives
  • Identifying regulatory risks applicable to the organisation and contributing to the Compliance Risk Profile
  • Supporting business units in identifying compliance risks and documenting internal controls
  • Planning and preparing allocated compliance monitoring activities, including drafting memos to business units
  • Drafting self-assessment documents or questionnaires for compliance monitoring
  • Preparing compliance working papers
  • Monitoring and promoting adherence to regulatory requirements
  • Managing, maintaining, and monitoring Gifts and Entertainment Registers
  • Monitoring monthly compliance calendar submissions
  • Following up on logged compliance issues and submitting monthly reports
  • Analysing new legislation for potential impact and assisting in preparing action plans to ensure compliance
  • Reviewing compliance-related policies and procedures
  • Assisting in managing the “contact us” compliance mailbox

Ad Hoc Duties

  • Performing reasonable tasks as required by the Line Manager or Executive Manager

Training and Development

Active involvement in personal skills development through an agreed performance development plan with the Line Manager to strengthen:

  • Negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including active listening and presentation of findings and recommendations
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with colleagues, staff, and external stakeholders

Internship Objective

This internship is designed to build foundational expertise in governance, compliance risk management, and regulatory monitoring while developing professional competencies required in a corporate compliance environment.
