Enrolled Nurse (3-Month Contract)

Wits Health Consortium, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of the Witwatersrand, invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Enrolled Nurse within the SAMRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt).

The successful candidates will be appointed on a fixed-term contract of three months and will be based at the MRC/Wits Rural Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt). The position reports directly to the Project Manager.

About the Research Unit

The SAMRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt) is a leading health and population research centre within the Wits School of Public Health.

The Unit operates a Health and Socio-Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) covering the Agincourt sub-district in rural Mpumalanga Province. Established in 1992, the HDSS supports longitudinal population registration and life-course research through observational and intervention studies.

As part of ongoing core and nested research initiatives, including the HAALSA – SAMRC Study, the Unit seeks to appoint Enrolled Nurses to support field-based research activities.

Main Purpose of the Role

To participate in key research activities including participant recruitment, clinical assessments, and fieldwork support, contributing to the Unit’s research objectives.

Key Performance Areas

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Conducting household visits for Echo sub-study participants
  • Recruiting participants for the portable MRI study
  • Obtaining informed consent from study participants
  • Performing echocardiograms
  • Conducting eligibility screening checks
  • Adhering strictly to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Scheduling participant appointments
  • Maintaining participant confidentiality at all times
  • Submitting daily progress reports to the Field Supervisor and Project Manager
  • Responding to and resolving data queries
  • Communicating routinely with the Project Manager and Research Manager
  • Performing additional fieldwork activities as required

Minimum Education and Training Requirements

  • Diploma in General Nursing
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)

Minimum Work Experience

  • At least 2 years’ relevant nursing experience
  • Minimum of 1 year experience within a research environment

Desirable Additional Skills and Experience

  • Strong organisational skills
  • Good knowledge of local villages within the study site
  • Experience using electronic data collection tools
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Strong multitasking and decision-making capabilities
  • Self-motivated and proactive work ethic
