Position Purpose
The purpose of this role is to train and develop candidates to become fully qualified Yard Officials. Selected trainees will participate in structured training programs and must successfully complete all required learning modules.
The programme focuses on building operational competence, safety awareness, and practical railway yard management skills.
Key Responsibilities
Training and Development
The trainee will be expected to complete both theoretical and practical training modules within the specified timeframes.
Responsibilities include:
- Attending and completing all theoretical training sessions
- Completing practical training in operational environments
- Developing competency to perform operational duties
- Learning how to operate railway yard equipment safely
- Demonstrating accountability for assigned operational tasks
Operational Performance
During the training programme, the trainee must demonstrate the ability to perform assigned duties safely and efficiently.
Key tasks include:
- Carrying out work assignments according to training requirements
- Supporting operational yard activities
- Following company operational procedures
- Contributing to the organisation’s operational goals and strategies
Training Documentation
Trainees are required to maintain proper records of their training progress.
This includes:
- Keeping a portfolio of evidence documenting training activities
- Recording theoretical learning outcomes
- Documenting practical work experience
- Submitting records as required for competency assessment
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
- Ability to pass a psychological screening assessment
- Ability to pass a medical fitness test, including eye and hearing tests
- Must be physically fit
- Must successfully complete both theoretical and practical Yard Official training
Knowledge Requirements
Successful candidates should develop knowledge in the following areas:
- Yard Official operational procedures
- Railway yard and siding layouts
- Geography of assigned railway sections

- Act 85 railway regulations
- High-voltage safety procedures
